CAST AWAY STONES takes place on the prairies of north Iowa in the late 1970s, on the brink of what would later become the Farm Crisis. Frederick Heinold, a young farmer, is struggling to harvest his crops, unaware that his wife, JoAnn, has begun an affair with a questionable stranger from Florida that will eventually threaten their marriage and the only life Frederick has ever known. These personal dramas take place against a background of wrenching change as the traditional farming that Frederick seeks to preserve is threatened by the onslaught of agribusiness, personified by his aggressive neighbor, Eldon Mathews. As the novel moves toward its conclusion, dirt, desire and drugs converge upon these characters, transforming their lives forever.

I enjoyed this book. The author has a good feel for language and dialogue and his characters seem very real. He is also adept at establishing place. The story is set in Northern Iowa, an area familiar to Schinnow who clearly knows small farming communities. Frederick and his neighbor, Eldon, are symbolic of the struggle between traditional farmers who prospered in the past and modern “big” farmers who run their farms like corporations. Frederick works the farm he inherited, and stubbornly resists the movement toward big corporate farming. He works hard and makes a modest income. He is clinging to a dying way of life, but he enjoys the work and that’s enough for him. Unfortunately, it’s not enough for his wife, JoAnne, who refuses to fit into the traditional role of farmer’s wife. She doesn’t want to live in an old house, cook hearty meals and help out in the fields when needed. She wants Frederick to sell the farm to their neighbor, Eldon, who is amassing enough acres to be considered a “big” farmer. JoAnn has become a real estate agent and has been surprisingly successful. She clearly longs for a more glamorous life, and it’s not hard to see why she falls prey to a handsome stranger. Meanwhile, a torrential rain ruins Frederick’s crop. Faced with losing not only his wife, but also his farm, Frederick takes an uncharacteristic risk with life-changing consequences. Two incidental characters are particularly interesting. Eldon’s wife, Sherry, is rarely seen until the last few chapters, but she is memorable. I also liked Lisa, a young woman Frederick hires to help out on the farm when JoAnn leaves for a life in town. The title of the book refers to a verse from Ecclesiastes: A time to cast away stones, A time to gather stones together.

Cast Away Stones Mr Richard Schinnow 9780615601991 Books Reviews

Richard Schinnow's first novel, Cast Away Stones, is a well crafted, thoughtful story based on his first-hand knowledge of the era, the setting, and his intimate view of his characters' strengths and flaws. He has formed his characters thoroughly and consistently bringing to the reader a clear understanding of who and why they are as they struggle to make sense of decisions they made and did not make in a rapidly changing world. His prose is fluid, educated, believable, and sensitive. It often borders on poetry as he lets us view the details of their private thoughts and lives. Mr. Schinnow is bold and harsh, but also soft and gentle as the characters' actions demand. I appreciated his lovely insight into both the male and female emotions (or lack thereof) in their relationships. These relationships are varied and complex and the pen with which they have been forged is a subtle reminder that decisions and actions based on greed, stubbornness, control, and naivety often result in lives out of control. Although this story is set in rural America, the author has tapped into a macrocosmic tale of lives we all have known and experienced as we became strangers in a world full of "new stones." We struggle to throw out the "old stones" so we can attempt to grow from who we were to who we need to be in these changing times. Thanks for the good read, Mr. Schinnow. I look forward to your next book!
Cast Away Stones
Full of intrigue. Situations that mirror real life rather than far-fetched situations that are hard to believe could happen.
I would rate this book with at 5 stars. It was captivating throughout its entirety
Well don Richard. When is the next Iowa story coming. Can't wait!
