Rollins has a vivid imagination with a most provocative and compelling idea driving this book, and its sequels (which I've yet to read). 'Visitor' comes with an entire alien vocabulary (listed in the back for easy reference), plus some history, giving depth and making the story seem more real. Its good characters that are easy to care about and suspenseful situations kept bringing me back to the book to find out how it would play out. Rollins brings careful consideration to the human condition and the Christian perspective, from an alien perspective as well as both sides (pro/con) of the human perspective. Why not 5 stars? The dialog was somewhat hackneyed at times IMO, but that did not hinder the story or suspense. I must say the message of the book, the idea behind it, was very intriguing. I would recommend it highly to Christian believers as well as those who have questions about the Bible and its mysteries.

Arana's Visitor explores those questions in an imaginative, exciting story. Book 1 of the Vadelah Chronicles ("vadelah" is an alien word roughly translating to "apostle"), it opens when Panagyra, a member of a bird-like species called the phantera, crash lands on earth. David and his roommate Todd hide "Gyra" in their apartment as long as they can, but a malicious agency with a hand in Gyra's crash landing is now seeking to capture him. The three become fugitives in an exciting race to send Gyra home, but in a terrifying moment, David finds himself trapped on Gyra's ship with the badly wounded phantera, heading to a world he'd never imagined existed.

On Arana, Gyra's home planet, David discovers that God has been directing his steps. David is the prophesied vadelah, the one who will bring the message of Christ not only to Gyra's peaceful race but also to the universe's most depraved and terrifying peoples.

Julie Rollins is a homeschool mom who self-publishes her work. I met her online through a self-publishing loop, and she offered to send me a copy of Arana's Visitor. I'm glad she did! The story is creative and well-written, with likable characters, a fascinating premise, and some tear-jerking moments. It's light on "science," making "science fiction" a bit of a misnomer, but the cultures and creatures in Julie's work are well developed. She also does fantastic artwork, which can be viewed on her Web site.

Note This is a very family friendly book, but it does address serious issues of sin and immorality, especially on earth -- one pivotal scene revolves around abortion, one Peretti-style showdown deals with New Age practices, and other major modern issues are addressed. Parents may want to screen or read this with their very young children.

I think it is a fun quick read and great for the kindle price.
After reading to book five, I do NOT recommend this for children who don't know how babies are made. It does not explain, but will raise questions. Other than that, it is an AWESOME series, and you should read the rest.
If you like the "Time" quartet and the space trilogy and aren't going to be offended by fundamentalist & prolife themes you will like it
The story combines the classical scenario of "an ordinary person befriends a stranded alien" with C.S. Lewis' Out of the Silent planet - a whole lot of aliens who had been believing in God all their history and some atheist human would be seriously taken aback if they met. The story is not as good as the Lewis' one (that would be a very high goal to reach!), but I would call it extremely pleasant. The strong point are the characters, especially the main ones, two young students and the alien. It's very funny to see them interact, one youth a solemn kind Christian, the other one a good hearted rogue, and their very clever but understandably confused new friend. I laughed a lot while reading. And many times held my breath in suspense, because the not very clearly defined bad guys from some government institution are after them, naturally, helped by clueless police force. They get in lot of trouble and generally are experiencing a hard time. But they always keep good humour and courage. I will not give any more spoilers, but you can trust the evil forces have no chance of winning.
Some weaker points one sees in the dialogues about faith. It's very hard to write those and not become preachy. I think the author not always managed that. But sometimes it does flow naturally, especially when aliens are involved. Their attitude in this matter is refreshingly not embarassed. But there are some points in which I would prefer more creative approach.
