Well I bought this as Im reading about National Service in the 50's and this came up in my searches. It was a very well written book about a school boy becoming an Airman. I must admit I would have liked to read a bit more about how his RAF apprenticeship influenced his career? I know in the book Mr Carlin does say that he kept his boy entry quiet but Im sure that the discipline, the trade skills and the skives he learned probably stood him in very good stead.Well written, entertaining and enjoyable.

For those who took the plunge and entered into boy service then this is the book for you.Although i too spent 18 months on East camp and a few years after the author the memories came flooding back.
I am ashamed to admit that my recollections, especially some of the more specific details have long been forgotten,
however,Brian rekindled(pardon the pun)my early years at St Athans,and also those heady days on Barry Island,thanks Brian for a fantastic read.
