Midnight Thief Book 1 Midnight Thief Livia Blackburne Books
I started this book expecting it to be just another average YA book. Not bad, but not standing out either. I have never admitted it, but I judge a book by the number of reviews it has. I’m a snob like that. Most of the time I won’t even click on the link if it doesn't have at least 100 reviews. I’m glad I was wrong. The more I read, the more I couldn’t stop reading.Kyra, the protagonist, is a well written and interesting character. she gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘cat burglar’. I love thief stories, and this is an original one. It also has a fantasy element without letting it take over and make everything in the book fantasy. Kyra is smart, resourceful, and a survivor. She learned to be self sufficient, even helping street kids when she has no coin. She is caring. One of the things that gets her into trouble is her big heart. She pretends to be tough and hardened, but she is kind and an idealist. Even after growing up alone on the streets, she still views the world as a closet optimist. When given the chance, she chooses to do something about the injustices happening around her, to right the wrongs done to the people of her city. Some might say she is naive, but I think she is just a bit innocent and even when she is told when she fights for is unrealistic in a cruel way, she still tries to change things for the better.
Not a lot of romance. The story was about Kyra and her journey to find out her past, and where she fits in the world. A lot of YA books have romance as the main story line, and everything else feels like an afterthought just to round out the story. Even though Kyra kicks herself for being fooled by a man once, she learns from the mistake and is strong enough to stop that from happening again. She isn’t a simpering girl who pines over any guy who shows her attention.
Even the supporting characters have more to them than is usual for a book. I really enjoyed reading about James. He was a wild card in the story. It took courage for the author to write him like that. But it really worked out. He is essential to the story and if this character were to be removed from the story line or changed, I feel like there would be this gaping hole in the plot. I enjoy to love to hate an antagonist.
One of the things I loved about this books is that it isn’t clear who the ‘bad guy’ is. Kyra learns that even when she is on the same side as someone, it doesn’t mean that they are good. No one is all good or all bad. In a lot of books, the good characters don’t have huge faults, and the bad guys have don't redeeming qualities that make it hard to not see things from their perspective like Midnight Thief. Kyra finds out that lesson the hard way. That is how the world really works. Everyone in this book is multidimensional.
All in all, I recommend Midnight Thief to anyone who is bored by all the YA books out there that have flat story lines and characters. It was refreshing to be surprised by a book. That hasn’t happened for a while. After a while all the books seem to follow the basic theme: character is introduced, character meets love interest, someone in characters life is jealous, love triangle, conflict ensues, character solves conflict with help of the person he/she realizes is ‘the one’, resolution. This book has plot twists that are big and small. Some you can see coming and some surprise you.

Midnight Thief Book 1 Midnight Thief Livia Blackburne Books Reviews
There were a lot of great ideas in this book, but the execution just didn't live up to its potential for me. The world-building, the characterizations, and the plotting all felt very thin. I found it hard to actually care about most of the things that were going on, even though they should have been exciting. There was plenty of action, yet little tension. Also, the lack of description bugged me, since I had no idea what anyone looked like. The characters were all pretty bland figures that lacked the kind of spark that can draw you into a story.
I wish I could have enjoyed this book more, because it had a lot of promise. High fantasy about a girl thief who joins an group of assassins? Sounds cool, and yet so little was fleshed out, I felt like I was reading the synopsis for a richer story that hasn't been written yet. There was nothing particularly bad about the book - except maybe the forced romantic angle between characters that had no chemistry - but there wasn't anything particularly good about it either. Which I feel bad for saying, because I really, really wanted to like this book. I mean, look at that gorgeous cover! Look at that enticing description! Sadly, the packaging outshone the pages within.
Midnight Thief is a very interesting original YA fantasy story. It does hold your attention and you want to know what happens next which helps you keep reading till the end. The only thing is that throughout the story I felt a bit bad for Kyra, the main heroine. Like I still don't really know what her purpose is or what she is fighting for. She does have a good heart, she tries to help the people around her, but it seems that she quickly falls and trusts groups that later..... (you'll see), where in the end you're like oh no she can't catch a break with any of them (why?!). I hope in the next book we finally get to meet people without any hidden intentions that will help Kyra and her family, and I can't wait to learn more about her mysterious past. )
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I LOVE THIS BOOK HOLY TOLITO IT WAS FAB-U-LOUS! Anyone who says otherwise is lying! There's a buttload of action AND character development! I read reviews saying otherwise but while reading this book and after I finished it I'D HAVE TO SAY THOSE FOLKS ARE FLAT OUT WRONG! Freaking Kyra was so FREAKING COOL! Like a ninja! And the part where you see her ninja-ness from Tristam's perspective, during a certain mission on palace grounds, well that was flippin cool! OH OH OH AND THERE IS NO LOVE TRIANGLE! I kept dreading one of those damned geometric romances from hell BUT IT NEVER HAPPENED THANK BAJESUS UP ABOVE! I can't even explain my love for this book! I read it in an entire day, if that proves anything. Literally did nothing else today except eat and pee. I kept checking the percent at the bottom of my kindle screen like HOT DAMN OH MAN the end is near! But I kept on reading because I darned well couldn't stop! Too much action! Too much emotion! So much happening and albeit I predicted some things that happened but that didn't make it any less suspenseful. I loved these characters. Kick-ass, bad-ass but smart and realistic and HAVE I MENTIONED THE CATS? Even the cats kick ass and I love them too! Can't wait until August 5th when I can read the whole sequel in a day too. Hell, I don't even write reviews but in this case it is AB-SO-LUTELY necessary! Happy reading y'all!
